Concurrent Sessions

Forty minute sessions covering thirty minutes of presentation or workshop time followed by ten minutes of facilitated question time. Sessions will be streamed to align with the key themes of International Conference (ICCMP).

TECHNICAL SESSION – I

SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF MEDICINAL PLANTS: ISSUES AND PERSPECTIVES.
  • Policy, Programmes and Schemes on Conservation, Marketing and Sustainable use of Medicinal Plants: Critical Appraisal.
  • Promising practices of Public Private Partnership (PIP) on contract and captive farming of MAPs.
  • Issues and challenges in trade and exports of Medicinal Plants.
  • Promising Practices in bio-partnership: An Appraisal.
  • Challenges, issues and threats encountered by entrepreneurs in promoting viable base for manufacturing and processing of MAPs.
  • Developing effective Mechanism for patenting the innovation of local herbalists: Policy, Programme and legislative measures.
  • Evaluation of projects on medicinal plants implemented by NGOs and government agencies: promising practices.
  • Issues of Bio-piracy and Bio-prospecting: Appropriate redressal measures needed.

REGULATORY PROSPECTIVE OF DEVELOPMENT OF MEDICINAL PLANTS

  • Regulation and Registration of traditional practioners and traditional medicine.
  • Research on Medicinal Plants: Opportunities, threats innovation and Strategies.
  • Pharmaceutical Aspects of Development and formulation of drugs from Plant Extracts.
  • Formulation of Policies and legal framework that facilitate local control over habitat of medicinal plants.


TECHNICAL SESSION – IV

CURRENT STATUS ON RESEARCH ON MEDICINAL PLANTS
  • Priority areas of research on Sustainable Management of Medicinal Plants.
  • Participatory Action Research model on Registration and patenting of medicinal plants.
  • Developing agro-techniques for medicinal plants and determining fair price for growers.
  • Study on seasonal variation and phyto-chemical variation within available genotype, chemotype and ecotypes of MAP.
  • Development of post harvest treatment, search for elite quality germ plasm and development of quality planting materials.
  • Determining Certification protocols for sustainable harvest of medicinal plants from the wild.
  • Determining indicators for lowering cost of production of extracts, Phyto- chemicals, natural colours, flavours and fragrances by use of latest technologies.

PATENTING TRADITIONAL KNOW-HOW AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHT OF HERBAL MEDICINE : ISSUES AND PROSPECTIVES
  • Developing registration mechanism for patenting herbal medicine : Threats and challenges.
  • Promising Practices of filing of patent application by tradition herbalists association : Case Studies.
  • Inclusion into the International Patent Classification of Classes, sub-classes etc. for herbal medicine.
  • Customary Protection of Medicinal Plant Knowledge : An Appraisal.
  • Defining the criteria of potentiality of herbal medicine : Critical Appraisal.

TECHNICAL SESSION –VI

PROMISING PRACTICES ON SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF MAPs
  • Identification of plant species having medicinal properties and establishment of data banks and herbariums.
  • Conservation of medicinal herbs in their natural habitats -- in-situ and in protected areas (ex-situ)
  • Selection of superior germplasm based on laboratory analysis and field studies, for domestication and commercial production.
  • Standardisation of propagation and cultivation practices for producing superior quality herbal materials, which can be adopted by farmers.
  • Validation of the uses of various medicinal herbs in curing different diseases, standardization of the protocols and documentation.
  • Strengthening of research to find suitable herbal medicines to cure various diseases, particularly newly emerging diseases.
  • Patenting of the traditional practices and germplasm. Facilitation counters can be established to assist the traditional healers to patent their therapy.
  • Introduction of herbal medicine as an integral subject in medical colleges dealing with different systems of medicine.
  • Popularising the use of various herbal medicines through specific prescriptions, social marketing and mass awareness.
  • Supporting traditional healers and Ayurvedic practitioners through sharing of knowledge, networking, supply of superior quality germplasm and linkage with farmers for supply of raw materials.
  • Establishing a formal linkage between the cultivators, bulk consumers and pharmaceutical industries at national and international levels.
  • Modifications in the Government policies to support research and development on herbal medicines and to curb over-exploitation of medicinal herbs in natural forests.
