Objectives
  • To bring together researchers, administrators, policy makers, companies manufacturing herbal medicine traders, herbalists, Media persons, lawyers, NGOs and social activists on a common platform to initiate meaningful dialogue relating to sustainable management of medicinal plants, promoting marketing network and conservation strategy with involvement of stakeholders.
  • To critically examine the implementation of Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) at national and regional level recommended in the Global Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) 2002 by different countries of the world.
  • To critically examine replicability of promising practices on sustainable management of medicinal plants, conservation and marketing strategy and patenting practices adopted by different Government and Non-Government Agencies across the globe.
  • To identify the mechanism for implementation of the resolutions of Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention, Ramsar, 1971), Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (World Heritage Convention, Paris, 1972), Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES or Washington Convention, Washington, 1973), Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS or Bonn Convention, Bonn, 1979) and Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD, Rio de Janeiro, 1992) and defining indicators of Sustainable Management of Medicinal Plants at national and regional level.
  • To critically assess the role of civil society organizations in safeguarding the plant biodiversity resources and protecting intellectual and cultural property right of local communities relating to local management of plants and sustainable harvesting protocols as co-related with improved livelihoods of local people.
  • To recommend policy makers, corporate actors and development agencies and traders for developing viable mechanism ensuring marketing network of medicinal herbs at national and international level.
  • To develop a viable arrangements facilitating a registration mechanism for informal innovations and filling of application for protection of registered traditional know-how.
  • To develop a mechanism for reinforcing the cooperation and communication among official responsible for overseeing the production and marketing of products made from medicinal plants and the introduction of new ones.
